Scrap Yards Revel In New Car Scrap Scheme
Scrap dealers across the country hope to benefit from the governments new scrap car scheme as it should quite literally bring a 'ton' of extra business to the yards.
The government initiative sees car owners being offered £2000 off the price of a new vehicle if they trade in their old ones for scrap. Under the new scheme vehicles being traded in must be over 10 years old and be owned by an individual for over 1 year.
The new scheme has been designed to help boost the car industry which has been in decline since the start of the latest recession. Initial reports suggest that the government has put up an initial £300 million for the scheme and aims to run it until 2010. So far over 38 vehicle manufacturers have signed up to the scheme and early indications have been promising.
Owner of Metro Salvage Terry Walker said: "The new scheme should benefit us greatly and we have already formed relationships with some key dealers in the area.
He also goes on to say that he believes dealers just want to get rid of vehicles in a quick and easy manner which as a leading scrap yard we can offer. It is difficult to say just how many more cars will come through our gates as many people just don't have the money to buy a new car at the moment."
The government is also keen to promote the scheme as it can help play a part in their efforts to promote a greener environment. Older vehicles in comparison to new ones have a much bigger impact on the environment and make use of old technologies. Emissions produced by vehicles play a large part in the countries total carbon emissions output.
The scheme is still in its early phases however both the government and scrap yards are confident in the scheme.
